Rising Austrian Junior Stars Shine at German Junior Squash Open 2023

On the final day of the German Junior Open, the Austrian delegation took to the court in Hamburg and presented a strong challenge to their competitors. The 6-strong team was met with great anticipation and excitement, as they were represented in the U17s by Daniel LUTZ in the finals.

The day began with Samuel WINKLER competing for 13th place against Robert LINDNER, and what followed was an exhilarating 5 set match that Samuel emerged victorious from. It was a well-deserved position in the top half of the draw.

Lorenz HOCHSTRASSER was up next, taking on Kilian LEDDIN for 53rd place. Lorenz proved his skills with a comfortable 3-0 win.

In the U17s, Karina SEINER represented Austria, fighting for 11th place against Alexandra GHIORGHISOR from Romania. Unfortunately, Karina was unable to secure a win and settled for 12th place.

Katharina GASTL and Gioia D’ ALONZO were in the middle of the 27 girl U19s. Katharina faced Julia GILLICH in the 15th place tie, managing to keep it close but falling 3-0 in the end. She took 16th position.

It was a thrilling day for the Austrian Squash Racquet Association (ÖSRV) at the German Junior Open! The youth team delivered outstanding results, leaving everyone on the edge of their seats.

Gioia D’ALONZO played against Finland’s Roosa JOUTSI and unfortunately lost 0/3

However, the highlight of the day from the Austrian Squash Racquet Association’s (ÖSRV) perspective was the exciting final between Daniel LUTZ and Fabian SEITZ.
Daniel LUTZ started off slow and quickly fell behind, but he picked himself up and won the first set 11/9. Despite being exhausted from the previous day’s matches, he fought until the end and kept the other sets close, but ultimately had to give the victory to the Swiss player, finishing in a fantastic second place.

Heribert MONSCHEIN, the Austrian Squash Racquet Association’s (ÖSRV) national coach, is thrilled with the team’s performance:

I’m incredibly proud of the Austrian youth team. The countless hours of training have paid off, and we can compete at the international level, as seen here at the German Junior Open Super Series (MONSCHEIN, ÖSRV)
